Abstract
The present invention is to a novel process for the preparation of a compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein p is 0, or 2; PA1 Ar is an optionally substituted phenyl or naphtyl; and PA1 inter alia R4 is an optionally susbtituted phenyl, naphth-1-yl, naphth-2-yl, or a heteroaryl ring; PA1 which process comprises reacting together an aldehyde of the formula: EQU R.sub.4 --CHO; PA1 wherein R.sub.4 is as defined above; PA1 a compound of the formula: EQU ArS(O)pH; PA1 wherein Ar, and p are as defined above; PA1 with formamide, an acid catalyst, and optionally a dehydrating agent.
