Abstract

An engine and pump assembly in which the pump has a water impermeable housing with a hollow cylindrical sleeve open at one end, and a plate mounted and sealed on the other end of the sleeve. The plate has an aperture disposed on the axis of the sleeve; and an engine is mounted on the housing with a drive shaft extending through the aperture in the plate coaxially with the sleeve. The sleeve has a port extending therethrough, and an elongated water impermeable hollow tube extends outwardly from the port to an open opposing end. A first impeller is mounted on the shaft of the engine within the sleeve for transporting water from the open end of the sleeve toward the plate of the housing; and a second impeller is mounted on the shaft of the engine adjacent to the plate of the housing for directing the flow of water away from the aperture in the plate to counter the axial thrust on the engine shaft produced by the first impeller and to reduce or eliminate the pressure of the water in the sleeve on the engine shaft seal. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a four-cycle engine and pump assembly is mounted on the bottom of a boat adjacent to the transom thereof with the open end of…
