Abstract

Dibenzazole compounds having the general structure: ##STR1## wherein; R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 are independently H or a substituent which aids in solubility of the compound or which provides a linker arm for linking the compound to another moiety; Y is H or a cleavable moiety; X is a hydrogen, halogen, CF.sub.3, or SO.sub.3 H; V and W are oxygen or sulfur; Z is --C.dbd.C--, --C.tbd.C-- or an aromatic ring moiety; and n is 0, 1, or 2. When n=0 at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, and R.sub.5 is a substituent which aids in solubility of the compound or which provides a linker arm for linking the compound to another moiety or X is a halogen, CF.sub.3 or SO.sub.3 H. These compounds are highly fluorescent and can be easily detected using a fluorometer. Derivatives in which the Y group is a substituent other than H contain a fluorescence inhibiting chemical moiety that upon removal restores the fluorescence of the compound. Methods for their synthesis and application are provided.
