Abstract

Phosphonic acid compounds I ##STR1## wherein PA0 Eth is optionally substituted 1,2-ethynediyl, ethanediyl or ethene-1,2-diyl; PA0 Y.sup.1 is oxygen or sulfur; PA0 Y.sup.2 is oxygen, sulfur or --N(R.sup.6)--; PA0 Y.sup.3 is oxygen, sulfur or --N(R.sup.7)--; PA0 R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 are hydrogen or PA1 optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl or heterocyclyl, or PA0 R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, R.sup.1 and R.sup.6, R.sup.2 and R.sup.7 together are optionally substituted 1,2-ethanediyl, 1,3-propylene, tetramethylene, pentamethylene or ethyleneoxyethylene, or PA0 R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 together are optionally substituted 1,2-phenylene; PA0 R.sup.3 is cyano, halogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy or haloalkoxy; PA0 R.sup.4 is hydrogen or halogen, and PA0 R.sup.5 is a heterocycle .PHI..sup.1 to .PHI..sup.22 as defined in the specification, their manufacture and intermediates therefore. The phosphonic acid compounds are effective against unwanted plants and act as desiccants and defoliants.
