Abstract

A water-containing compact detergent composition having a controllably variable strength containing an aqueous lye solution, a viscosity increasing agent selected from a compound corresponding to formula I or formula II EQU HOCH.sub.2 CH(R.sup.1)OR.sup.2 (I) EQU [HOCH.sub.2 CH(R.sup.8).sub.3-x NH.sub.x (II) and a solid alkali metal hydroxide. The product is useful in domestic or institutional dishwashing machines.
