Abstract
A compound selected from the group consisting of a 5,6-dihydro-.alpha.-pyrone of formula (I): ##STR1## wherein bond a is oriented either {character pullout} or {character pullout}; PA1 X is O or NH; PA1 R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of: PA2 a group R.sup.3 (O)C-- wherein R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of: (i) a group of formula R.sup.4 --CH.dbd.CH-- wherein R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkenyl, an aryl group, PA2 or a 5- or 6-membered unsaturated heterocyclic ring containing one or two O, N or S atoms, (ii) C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkyl; PA2 and (iii) an aryl group or a substituent which is a fused ring system of formula (1) or (2): ##STR2## PA2 wherein each of R' and R", which are the same or different and may occupy any position on ring a or ring b of said fused ring system, is H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; PA3 a group ArCH.sub.2 -- wherein Ar is an aryl group; and PA3 a group R.sup.5 O--CH.sub.2 -- wherein R.sup.5 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl optionally interrupted by one or two O atoms; and PA2 R.sup.2 is CH.sub.3 or, when R.sup.1 is a group of formula (A) as defined below, R.sup.2 is R.sup.6 OOC-- or R.sup.6 NOC-- wherein R.sup.6 i…
