Abstract

The present application provides cyanine dyes of the formula (I) ##STR1## in which PA1 R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 mutually independently denote a substituent, providing that at least one of the residues R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 denotes an indolyl substituent, PA1 X denotes O, S, Se, NR.sup.9, CH.dbd.CH or C(CH.sub.3).sub.2, wherein R.sup.9 denotes a optionally substituted alkyl residue, PA1 R.sup.7, R.sup.8 mutually independently denote alkyl, sulfoalkyl, carboxyalkyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 --SO.sub.2- Y--SO.sub.2 --alkyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 --SO.sub.2 --Y--CO--alkyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 --CO--Y--SO.sub.2 --alkyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 --CO--Y--O--alkyl or --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 --NH--SO.sub.3.sup..theta., --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 --N(alkyl)--SO.sub.3.sup..theta. or --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 --N(aryl)--SO.sub.3.sup..theta., providing that l=1 to 6 and Y means NH or N.sup.-, PA1 n means 1, 3, 5, 7, PA1 L denotes a substituted or unsubstituted methine group, which may be a constituent of one or more carbocyclic rings, and PA1 M denotes a counterion optionally necessary to equalise charges, as well as color photographic materials containing cyanine dyes of the formula (I) and th…
