Abstract

A pharmaceutical composition that inhibits or slows the growth of viruses in animals, particularly in mammals, is disclosed. This same composition is can be used to treat viral infections, particularly HIV. The composition comprises from about 10 mg to about 10000 mg of a carbamic acid ester derivative of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is independently oxygen or sulfur, R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, wherein R.sub.2 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and wherein Y is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chloro, fluoro, bromo, hydroxy, oxychloro and sulfhydryl or pharmaceutical addition salt or prodrug thereof. The most preferred compound is (4-chlorophenyl)-carbamic acid, 3-(hexahydro-3-ethyl-1-methyl-2-oxo-1H-azepin-3-yl) 2 phenyl ester.
