Abstract

A process for the preparation of compounds of the general formula (I) ##STR1## by reacting an aldehyde compound of the general formula (II) ##STR2## with a urea compound of the general formula (III) ##STR3## in the presence of carbon monoxide and a catalytically active metal compound. Compounds of the general formula (I) are important intermediates for the synthesis of .alpha.-amino acids.
