Abstract
Intercalation compositions having spinel structures with crystallites of metal oxides (M.sub.2 O.sub.3) dispersed throughout the structure are provided having the general formula Li.sub.1+x M.sub.y Mn.sub.2-x-y O.sub.4. Methods of producing the intercalation compositions and rechargeable lithium batteries containing the compositions are also provided.
