Abstract
A catalyst for the selective oxidation of olefins in the presence of air or oxygen, comprising a compound of the formula (1) EQU Mo.sub.x O.sub.y (L).sub.z (1) where PA1 x is 1, 2 or 3, PA1 y is an integer from 0 to 2x+1, PA1 z is an integer from 1 to 2x, PA1 wherein the ligand L is a compound of the formula (2) or (3) ##STR1## PA1 where PA2 n is 0 or 1, PA2 X is a nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur atom, PA2 Y is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkoxy, F, Cl, Br, I, COOCH.sub.3, C.sub.6 -C.sub.14 -aryl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, PA2 R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 form a ring containing from 4 to 8 carbon atoms onto which one or two aromatic rings may be fused, PA2 R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are hydrogen, branched or straight-chain C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl or branched or straight-chain C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -haloalkyl which substitute the ring formed by R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 and/or the rings fused onto this ring, PA1 or the ligand L is a compound of the formula (4) or (5) ##STR2## PA2 where R is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkoxy, COOCH.sub.3, carbonyl oxygen, C.sub.6 -C.sub.14 -aryl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl and n is 1 or 2 and m is from 1 to 6.
