Abstract

A peptide which is a monomer, homodimer, heterodimer, homotrimer, heterotrimer, homotetramer or heterotetramer, and is based on the following amino acid sequence: Gly Ile Gly Asp Pro Val Thr Xaa Leu Lys 1 5 10 Ser Gly Ala Ile Xaa His Pro Val Phe Xaa 15 20 Pro Arg Arg Tyr Lys Gln Ile Gly Gly Xaa 25 30 Gly Leu Pro Xaa Thr Lys Xaa Xaa Xaa Xaa 35 40 which has been designated SEQ ID NO.: 1, or a variant of said amino acid sequence, as a homomonomer or heteromonomer. In the forgoing amino acid sequence, each Xaa independently represents an amino acid selected from the group consisting of essential and non-essential amino acids. The peptides have activity against bacteria, mycota, and viruses, and are useful in cosmetic and pharmaceutical compositions against such microorganisms when topically applied to a person.
