Abstract

The present application provides cyanine dyes of the formula (1) ##STR1## in which PA1 R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6 mutually independently mean H, a substituent or R.sup.5 together with R.sup.6 or R.sup.4 together with R.sup.5 mean the remaining members to complete an optionally substituted fused benzo ring or naphtho ring system, providing that at least one of the substituents R.sup.1, R.sup.2 or R.sup.3 is a benzothienyl substituent, PA1 X denotes O, S, Se, CH=CH, C(CH.sub.3).sub.2 or NR.sub.7 (R.sub.7 =optionally substituted alkyl), PA1 S.sub.1, S.sub.2 mutually independently mean alkyl, sulfoalkyl, carboxyalkyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 --SO.sub.2 --Y--SO.sub.2 -alkyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 --SO.sub.2 --Y--CO-alkyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 --CO--Y--SO.sub.2 -alkyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 NHSO.sup.-.sub.3, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 N(alkyl)SO.sup.-.sub.3, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 N(aryl)SO-.sup.-.sub.3, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1 --CO--Y--CO-alkyl, providing that 1 means 1 to 6 and Y means NH or N.sup.-, PA1 n means 3, 5 or 7, PA1 L denotes substituted or unsubstituted methine groups, which may be constituents of one or more carbocyclic rings, and PA1 M denotes a counterion optionally necessar…
