Abstract
This invention relates to a continuous process for the manufacture of .beta.-isophorone by isomerization under homogeneous catalysis of .alpha.-isophorone. The process consists of introducing .alpha.-isophorone and a solution of an alkaline hydroxide into a reaction region at a temperature ranging from 150.degree. C. to 216.degree. C., simultaneously removing by distillation a fraction comprising an amount by weight of .beta.-isophorone ranging from 30% to 90%, drawing off the heavy products and then rectifying the fraction removed from the reaction mixture by distillation.
