Abstract

A process for obtaining .alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylphenylacetic acid wherein .alpha.,.alpha.dimethylbenzyl cyanide is reacted in the presence of sodium hydroxide, water and a C.sub.4 - and/or C.sub.5 -alcohol at temperatures above about 100.degree. C. and the .alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylphenylacetic acid is obtained by acidification.
