Abstract

The invention relates to an emulsion comprising bromide grains wherein said grains are chemically sensitized with a water soluble Au(I) complex having the formula EQU [L--Au--L]M wherein the complex is symmetrical; L is an organomercapto ligand which has antifogging, stabilizing, or sensitizing properties, and M is a cationic counter ion and a rapid sulfiding agent represented by structure SS-1: ##STR1## PA1 wherein each of the R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 groups independently represents an alkylene, cycloalkylene, carbocyclic arylene, heterocyclic arylene, alkarylene or aralkylene group; or taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 or R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 can complete a 5- to 7-membered heterocyclic ring; and PA1 each of the B.sub.1, B.sub.2, B.sub.3, and B.sub.4 groups independently is hydrogen or represents a carboxylic, sulfinic, sulfonic, hydroxamic, mercapto, sulfonamido or primary or secondary amino nucleophilic group, with the proviso that at least one of the B.sub.1 R.sub.1 to B.sub.4 R.sub.4 groups contains the nucleophilic group bonded to a urea nitrogen atom through a 1 - or 2-membered chain.
