Abstract
A surface is provided with antibiotic or antiseptic properties. A solid substrate is modified by covalently fixing one or more spacers having reactive extremities via a proximate reactive extremity, and one or more antibiotic, bactericidal, viricidal or fungicidal molecules covalently bonded to a distal reactive extremity of the spacer or spacers. The spacer has formula EQU A.sub.1 --(CH.sub.2).sub.n --A.sub.2, where: PA1 A.sub.1 is ##STR1## where Z=H, OH or Cl; or SiY.sub.3 where Y.sub.3 is Cl or an alkoxy group containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms; PA1 n is in the range 2 to 18; PA1 A.sub.2 is selected from the following residues: CH.dbd.CH.sub.2, OH, halogen or ##STR2## where Z=H, OH or Cl.
