Abstract

A rechargeable lithium battery has a positive electrode, a negative electrode and a non-aqueous electrolyte. The active material of the positive or negative electrode is tungsten complex sulfide, either with or without addition of lithium thereto. The tungsten complex sulfide contains tungsten, sulfur and at least one transition metal selected from Cu, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni, and has substantially the same crystal structure as WS.sub.2.
