Abstract

Polymers of alkenes are prepared by suspension polymerization in the presence of catalyst systems by a process in which the catalyst systems used are supported catalyst systems obtainable by PA1 A) reaction of an inorganic carrier with a metal compound of the general formula I EQU M.sup.1 (R.sup.1).sub.r (R.sup.2).sub.s (R.sup.3 ).sub.t (R.sup.4 ).sub.u I PA1 where PA2 M.sup.1 is an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or a metal of main group III or IV of the Periodic Table, PA2 R.sup.1 to R.sup.7 are variously halogen, alkoxy, dialkylamino, hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.15 -aryl, alkylaryl or arylalkyl each having 1 to 10 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical and 6 to 20 carbon atoms in the aryl radical, PA2 r, s, t and u are integers from 1 to 4 the sum r+s+t+u corresponding to the valency of M.sup.1, PA1 B) reaction of the material obtained according to A) with a metallocene complex in its metal dihalide form and a compound forming metallocenium ions and PA1 C) subsequent reaction with a metal compound of the general formula II EQU M.sup.2 (R.sup.5).sub.o (R.sup.6).sub.p (R.sup.7).sub.q II.
