Abstract

A copolymer obtainable by free-radical polymerization of PA1 A) 50-99.99% by weight of an olefinically unsaturated C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 monocarboxylic acid, of an olefinically unsaturated C.sub.4 -C.sub.8 dicarboxylic acid or the anhydride thereof or a mixture of such carboxylic acids or anhydrides with PA1 B) 0.01-50% by weight of an olefinically unsaturated quaternary ammonium compound of the formula I or II ##STR1## PA1 where PA2 R.sup.1 is C.sub.6 -C.sub.20 -alkyl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.20 -alkenyl, C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, phenyl, phenyl(C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl) or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl)phenyl, PA2 R.sup.2 is hydrogen, methyl or phenyl, PA2 R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, PA2 X is halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxysulfonyloxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkanesulfonate, it also being possible for the latter to occur as R.sup.3 or R.sup.4 with the formation of a betaine structure, PA2 Y is O or NH, and PA2 A is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkylene, or a mixture of such ammonium compounds, PA1 C) 0 to 49.99% by weight of an acrylate or methacrylate of the formula III ##STR2## PA1 where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and Y have the abovementioned meanings, R.sup.5 is hydrogen, methyl o…
