Abstract
The invention is directed to a process for preparing a bis(hydroxymethyl)perylenetetracarboximide compound by reacting perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboximide with formaldehyde. The bis(hydroxymethyl)perylenetetracarboximide can be isolated or further reacted in a one pot synthesis to yield a compound of the formula wherein X1 and X2 are organic radicals.
