Abstract

A filtering device for treating substances passing therethrough includes a filter cartridge having a cylindrical inner wall surrounded by a cylindrical outer wall. The inner and outer walls are spaced to define an annular space between them. A filtering media occupies the annular space and operates to remove contamination from a fluid flowing through the filter cartridge. First and second covers are located at opposite axial ends of the filter cartridge for sealing the system. At least one biasing assembly is disposed at one axial end of the filter cartridge for applying an approximately constant compression force to the filter medium. The compression force minimizes the formation of voids and the occurrence of bridging within the filtering media. A sensing mechanism, such as a Hall Effect sensor, can be applied to the filter cartridge for detecting changes in the filtering media which indicate the formation of voids or defects in the filtering media.
