Abstract

The invention provides methods of forming a monomolecular chemisorption film having an excellent uniformity and liquid crystal alignment performance with a high production efficiency. The monomolecular chemisorption film of the invention can be suitably used for liquid crystal alignment layers. A method according to the invention includes at least the steps of forming a solution layer on a surface of a substrate, by contacting the adsorption solution with the surface of the substrate, the adsorption solution including a silane-based surface active agent, and a nonaqueous organic solvent, accelerating a chemisorption reaction by evaporating the organic solvent and concentrating the surface active agent contained in the solution layer in a dry atmosphere having a relative humidity of 30% or lower to chemisorb the molecules of the surface active agent onto the surface of the substrate, aging to complete the chemisorption reaction for a predetermined time, after the evaporating the organic solvent in the solution layer, and washing the surface of the substrate with a nonaqueous organic solvent to remove unreacted molecules of the surface active agent remaining on the surface of the sub…
