Abstract

A solid catalyst component for the polymerization of olefins CH2═CHR, in which R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical having 1-12 carbon atoms, the solid catalyst component including Mg, Ti, halogen and an electron donor selected from &bgr;-substituted glutarates other than diisopropyl &bgr;-methyl glutarate and which are not alpha-substituted. The catalyst component, when used in the polymerization of olefins, and in particular polypropylene, is capable of providing polymers in high yield and with a high isotactic index expressed in terms of high xylene insolubility.
