Abstract

A method for controlling a supercharging device for an internal combustion engine includes controlling a variable (x) using different control characteristics in each of at least four sub-ranges defined by a gradient (dx/dt) of the variable to be controlled (x) and a difference (<CUSTOM-CHARACTER FILE="US06581382-20030624-P00900.TIF" ALT="custom character" HE="20" WI="20" ID="CUSTOM-CHARACTER-00001"/>x) between the variable to be controlled (x) and a control variable (xs). An apparatus for controlling a supercharging device for an internal combustion engine includes a controller having a range of control that includes at least four sub-ranges devided in accordance with a gradient (dx/dt) of the variable to be controlled (x) and a difference (<CUSTOM-CHARACTER FILE="US06581382-20030624-P00900.TIF" ALT="custom character" HE="20" WI="20" ID="CUSTOM-CHARACTER-00002"/>x) between the variable to be controlled (x) and a control variable (xs).
