A liquid-crystalline medium based on a mixture of polar compounds having positive dielectric anisotropy, characterized in that it comprises one or more compounds of the general formula I in whichR, A, L1, L2 and Y are as defined herein are suitable for use in liquid crystal displays such as MLC, TN or STN displays.
