Abstract

The present device for purifying the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine comprises a particulate filter 70 on which the trapped particulates are oxidized and reversing means 74 for reversing the exhaust gas upstream side and the exhaust gas downstream side of the particulate filter. The particulate filter has a trapping wall for trapping the particulates. The reversing means reverses the exhaust gas upstream side and the exhaust gas downstream side of the particulate filter so that the first trapping surface and the second trapping surface are used alternately to trap the particulates. The particulate filter has a first opening portion and a second opening portion through which the exhaust gas flows in and out from the particulate filter and is arranged in the exhaust pipe 71 upstream of the muffler. At least part of the circumferential portion of the particulate filter between the first opening portion and the second opening portion is in contact with the flow of the exhaust gas in the exhaust pipe.
