Abstract

This invention is a novel design for hot inserting/removing add-on cards in a data processing system while not increasing the complexity of design nor cost of manufacturing. A single hot insertion controller and its corresponding driver is used in conjunction with a plurality of operand latches and readbcak buffers to monitor all add-on card slots and to control the arbiter switches, the signal switches, and the power switches of the add-on card slots, and the add-on card for hot insertion/removal while preventing the other components on the data bus and application devices from using those components, thus avoiding any interference during the insertion/removal.
