Abstract

An electro-optical device is provided which includes a TFT array substrate having pixel electrodes, and an opposing substrate having an opposing electrode. The surface of a substrate beneath the pixel electrodes in the TFT array substrate or the surface of a substrate beneath the opposing electrode in the opposing substrate is raised in a plurality of projections in an area facing the spacing between adjacent pixel electrodes which are driven by mutually opposite polarity voltages in an alternating drive manner. Arranged on top of the projections are edge portions of the adjacent pixel electrodes. The substrate surface is planarized to be flat in an area thereof facing the spacing between adjacent pixel electrodes which are driven by the same polarity voltages in an alternating drive method. With this arrangement, the electro-optical device such as a liquid-crystal display device provides a high aperture ratio of a pixel and presents a high-contrast and bright image by reducing an orientation defect of a liquid crystal resulting from a step in the surface of the substrate facing the liquid crystal and an orientation defect of the liquid crystal resulting from a transverse electric …
