Abstract

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for allowing a high quality image to be recorded with good coloring. When recording is performed on a recording medium by use of an anionic or cationic ink and a liquid composition, the ink containing a coloring material, the liquid composition containing fine particles in a dispersed state, the surfaces of the fine particles being charged with a polarity opposite to that of the ink,M, D, Ka, tw and t satisfy the relation of where M (pg/&mgr;m2) is the amount of the liquid composition supplied to the recording medium per unit area, D (%) is the concentration of the fine particles of the liquid composition, Ka (&mgr;m/msec1/2) is the absorption coefficient of the liquid composition in the recording medium, tw (msec) is the time necessary for the liquid composition to moisten the recording medium, and t (msec) is the time necessary for the ink to come into contact with the supplied liquid composition after the liquid composition is supplied to the recording medium.
