Mammalian &agr;3(V) pro-collagen and collagen polypeptides and variants thereof are encoded by exemplified polynucleotides. Investigative, diagnostic and therapeutic methods employ the polypeptides, polynucleotides and related materials, such as antibodies, sense- or antisense oligonucleotides and polynucleotides, and the like.
