Abstract

The invention relates to a method for assigning an identity to an object (10) in a database, which object has an extension that includes a plurality of coordinate points in a coordinate system representing a multidimensional reality. The method is characterised by the steps of selecting one of the object's coordinate points (P0) and assigning the object an identity (11) based on the coordinates (x0,y0,z0,t0) of said coordinate point. Selecting the dimensions of the coordinate system in a suitable manner, e.g. by allowing them to comprise time, space and alternative embodiments, ensures that all objects in the database have wholly unique identities that are also based on one of the coordinate points of the object. This can be used to advantage in the database structure.
