Abstract

A zirconium-free aluminum salt which: (a) has an aluminum to chloride molar ratio in the range of 0.5-2.5:1; (b) comprises a nitrogen containing buffering material in an amount such that the ratio of nitrogen containing material to aluminum is the range of 0.05-0.26:1, and which nitrogen containing material is selected from the group consisting of a nitrogen containing buffering material of formulawhere n is a number in the range of 1-20, and each of R1, R2, and R3 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl and ethyl; and (c) the salt has a pH in the range of 2-4 at a concentration of 15%; wherein the salt is free of any other halide scavenging material and has a value of at least 0.50 for the ratio calculated as:
