Abstract
A network node in a communication system makes two reservation requests to a controller node in order for the network node to obtain resources from the controller to transmit data. In the network, downstream signals are transmitted from the controller to identify a first slot in which nodes may transmit random access requests to the controller. When a first node has data to transmit, the first node transmits a random access request signal to the controller in the first slot. The controller then transmits a downstream signal assigning a second slot for the first node to transmit a reserve request signal. In response the first node transmits a reserve request signal in the second slot. The controller then transmits a downstream signal which allocates resources to the first node to transmit its data.
