Abstract
Embodiments of the invention provide that an ignition is retarded when continuously occurring knocks are detected, while an ignition is not retarded when a singly occurring knock is detected. By detecting the number of occurrences of detection data pieces from a knock sensor 9 stored in a storage unit 14 in a predetermined time period, a distribution of the detection data pieces is created. When one detection data piece having a value not less than a knock determination value is inputted from the knock sensor 9, the distribution of the detection data pieces is checked. For example, when the detection data pieces spread in a wide range, or the knock level voltage of the total detection data pieces is not less than a predetermined value, a retard instruction is outputted.
